Performance materials company Low & Bonar has created a scholarship and student prize for Abertay students, aimed at those who are the first in their family to attend university, or who come from a low-income background.

Alyson McGinlay, 21, a fourth year Marketing and Business undergraduate, was selected to receive the inaugural Bonar Yarns Scholarship, worth £1,250, and Kevin Kopsieker, 21, a third year undergraduate studying the same course, was awarded the introductory Bonar Yarns prize, worth £150.

The pair visited the factory on Wednesday December 7 to meet some of the staff and build on the strong links between the company and the university.
Alyson said: “I was delighted to hear the news that I had been awarded the scholarship. “It was lovely to meet some of the staff at Low & Bonar.
“It is one of the oldest in the city, but it adopts very modern techniques in the way it is run, which is similar to the way we are taught at Abertay.
Kevin added: “The prize means a lot to me. It goes to show that hard work really does pay off, and it’s not a myth drilled into you as you are growing up.”

Sarah Gibb, Global Marketing Executive, Low & Bonar Dundee Ltd: “We’re extremely proud to support a local university like Abertay to encourage more students like Alyson and Kevin. “Having both students visit the site to see what we do as a business, is a great opportunity to show them Scottish manufacturing and meet some of the people behind the process. We wish them all the very best for the bright futures they have ahead of them.”

Raymond Denyer, General Manager, Low & Bonar Dundee Ltd, said: ‘‘Supporting a local university and its students is very important to Low & Bonar, and we’re delighted to be able to continue supporting Abertay for the 2017/18 academic year.”
