Abertay University has been honoured with a Silver Award in a scheme which supports defence personnel.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme encourages employers to support the armed forces community and to inspire others to do the same.

Abertay Principal Nigel Seaton collected the award from General Sir Gordon Messenger, the Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff, at a ceremony at Edinburgh Castle.

Professor Seaton said: “I am very pleased that Abertay University has been awarded the Silver Award of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, in recognition of the support we give to staff and students who serve in the reserve forces.”

The initiative issues bronze, silver and gold awards. Silver award holders must demonstrate support for service personnel issues and employ at least one member of the armed forces community.

They must also show flexibility towards annual training commitments and mobilisation of reservist employees and also support the employment of cadet instructors, armed forces veterans (including those who are wounded, injured and sick) and military spouses/partners.
