A discussion on how Islam can play a role in conserving the environment for future generations will be the focus of this month’s Open Lecture at the Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education in Dundee.
Dr Fazlun Khalid, founder of the Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences, will deliver the public lecture on Thursday, March 30 on Islam and ecology, examining the connection between the human community and the rest of the natural order.
Dr Khalid has a worldwide reputation as an advocate of environmental protection rooted in religious traditions and is now recognised as one of fifteen leading eco theologians in the world.
He will look at the way the human species is leaving a savaged planet for future generations to inherit caused by factors that include industrial development and consumerism.
Dr Khalid will consider how Muslim politicians and economists are actively tackling the issue. His audience will hear that care of the Earth is a shared responsibility with the spotlight on Islam and its ecological role.
Principal and Vice Chancellor of the College, Dr Hossein Godazgar, said: “The issue being addressed in this Open Lecture is wide ranging and very important.
“With his expertise, Dr Khalid’s lecture is certain to be enlightening, considered and absorbing.”
Since the College’s free Open Lectures started seven years ago, speakers from all over the world have accepted an invitation to deliver lectures on topics related to religion, Islam, Muslims and interfaith relations.
