What’s involved in guide dog obedience training?

A group of canine trainees from Guide Dogs for the Blind Association (Dundee Fundraising Branch) will join a menagerie of creatures for an Animal Extravaganza in Dundee this weekend (Saturday 8 April 2017). Guide dog activities will start at 11am with a guide dog puppy demonstration and a chance to meet the puppies. At midday, there will be a blind-folded walk around the Centre. These activities will be repeated at 2 and 3pm respectively.

In what is the latest ‘Meet the Expert’ event at Dundee Science Centre, RSPB Tayside & Fife will be showcasing a nature display with different birds’ nests and different homes that animals live in such as hedgehogs, bats and pondlife. Younger visitors can also make mini bug homes!

A host of animal handling sessions will also be on offer, with Animates Amazing Animals introducing visitors to a host of friendly exotic invertebrates and reptiles to meet, and handle.   Guests will include Pog the Australian Bearded Dragon, whose natural habitat is the Australian deserts, as well as tarantulas, snakes, lizards, snails and land hermit crabs.   They will remain in the Centre until Friday 14 April 2017, with additional animal handling sessions available from Animal Man’s Mini Zoo on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 April.  Advance booking for animal handling sessions is essential – visit www.dundeesciencecentre.org.uk for more information.

Puppy Training Supervisor Wendy Ramsay said, “We are delighted to be attending Dundee Science Centre for their ‘Meet the Expert’ event.  We will have a demonstration of guide dog obedience training and there will be an opportunity for visitors to have a go at sighted guiding.  People will also be able to meet some of our guide dog puppies and ask any questions they may have about Guide Dogs, including how they can get involved with our charity.”

The ‘Meet the Expert’ event will run from 10am-4pm, and is included as part of normal admission.
