Ryden secures major new development for Dundee

This week councillors approved the planning application in principle for a £7 million development in Dundee which has the potential to generate over 170 jobs.

Acting for joint applicants I&H Brown and Lidl, Ryden Planning made the application for a mixed use development on the 7 acre former East Kingsway Works site. The proposal includes a discount foodstore, coffee drive-thru, car showroom, a pub/restaurant and industrial units.

Originally the site was allocated within the Local Development Plan (LDP) for industrial use and the application was recommended for refusal as the proposed commercial and retail use did not specifically comply. Ryden successfully led the application by submitting a strong case for the proposals which addressed questions raised by councillors. Although the mixed use plans mark a move away from traditional industrial employment, the proposals now approved have the potential to generate significant employment opportunities from a number of occupiers.

Marc Giles, Ryden Planning Partner, said “This site has been vacant for 14 years and the proposal brought forward by our clients has the potential to generate much needed employment in this area of Dundee. Our presentation to council members highlighted that uses, such as retail outlets and commercial units, for which there is a demonstrable need, would see this site regenerated. We are delighted to have secured planning permission in principle and will now begin work on the detailed plans. Our clients would very much like to see construction start on site early in the new year.”
