The kids at Rugbytots Broughty Ferry & Angus held a “Tartan Tryathlon” and competed in activities to raise money for a good cause.

Over the course of three days, they raised more than £500 for the My Name’s Doddie Foundation.

Doddie Weir is a well-known sportsman, who earned 61 caps playing rugby for Scotland. After being diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), Doddie spoke of his desire to set up a charity to help fellow suffers.

Graeme Ogg, the owner of Rugbytots, said: “I grew up watching Doddie Weir and his ‘Barmy Army’ rampage across the Murrayfield turf.

“I loved him and all the things he stood for in Scottish rugby. Seeing Doddie walk out with the match ball at Murrayfield prior to the Scotland v New Zealand game really struck a chord and when the opportunity came up to help him in his quest we decided we would do anything for him and also raise the profile of MND.”

The tots competed in a range of challenges over the course of the three-day triathlon including counting how many passes between parent and child in 30 seconds, how many tries and how many kicks.

Funds were raised by donations and people could also sponsor a child for how many tries they scored.

Tots and parents also dressed in tartan for the event.

Speaking about the event, Graeme said: “It went really well, all the kids dressed up in tartan.

“We raised more than £500 so that was really really good.

“The generosity of the people was unbelievable.

“Everybody loves Doddie Weir. Most of the parents identify with who Doddie is.”

Each child who took part in the event was presented with a balloon and a certificate.

Rugbytots coaches more than 120 kids a week through its community classes. The youngsters learn about sport through a structure of agility, balance, coordination and, more importantly, fun and games.

Graeme added: “We have a real passion for rugby and take great delight in seeing the youngsters develop over the term. It’s so rewarding to watch them leave the class smiling and puffed out!”
