LOCAL SOCIAL enterprises are being encouraged to fly the flag for Dundee in a prestigious national competition.

The Social Enterprise Scotland Awards recognises the brightest and best businesses that reinvest or donate their profits to create positive social change.

This year there are seven awards categories Social Enterprise of the Year Scotland; One to Watch; Prove It: Social Impact; Buy Social - Market Builder; Environmental Social Enterprise; Social Enterprise Champion Scotland under 26 and Social Enterprise Champion Scotland over 26.

The winner of each award will receive a prize package including free membership of Social Enterprise Scotland, a ticket to the UK Social Enterprise Awards 2018 and a unique artwork trophy.

Backed by Social Enterprise Scotland the awards recognise innovation, impact and success in social enterprise and the winners in the first five categories will also be automatically shortlisted for the UK-wide Social Enterprise Awards later in the year.

Lynne Short convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “The increased interest and the growing number of social enterprises we have shows what a valuable and important contribution this type of enterprise makes to the city and the country as a whole.

“Evidence shows that social enterprises are helping to create income, jobs and growth and these awards are all about recognising the positive part they play.

“We want to focus on the enterprise element of these businesses as they have a huge economic impact on the city and are more than just the social element that they are sometimes perceived to be.

“So I would encourage the businesses themselves or anyone close to them to get nominating!”
