Launch of Dundee Science Centre’s ‘Medical Marvels’ Exhibition and Science Learning Suite

27th June 2018

Dundee Science Centre’s new Medical Marvels exhibition and science learning suite, the result of a £2M fundraising campaign, will open at Dundee Science Centre from Monday 2 July 2018, coinciding with the centre’s 18th birthday.

After several months of construction and fit-out, the redevelopment doubles the upper floor space through a mezzanine extension.

Recognising the past, present and future of medical science, visitors will approach the Medical Marvels exhibition through a medical curiosities wall showcasing genuine artefacts ranging from a rib scraper and glass eye insertor to 19th Century surgical toolkits. Alongside more modern advances, the artefacts are on loan from the University of Dundee Tayside Medical History Museum archives.

The high-tech clinical exhibition features a virtual anatomy table that allows visitors to select scenarios, from a how the heart pumps to ageing, and realistically explore the different layers of the human body.

There is also the chance to examine your veins with the vein finder and discover how we can see inside the body through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), exploring how disease can be diagnosed and treated through minimally-invasive techniques. With a strong link to innovations rooted in Dundee, the exhibition is underpinned by the work of Dundee’s Institute for Medical Science and Technology (IMSaT), University of Dundee and NHS Tayside.

Inside the operating theatre, visitors can try out ‘surgery’ on interactive torsos, from the first cut of the scalpel to stitching up the wound. Visitors can also test real-life techniques used in medical training and learn about the future of exploratory medicine using a range of interactive exhibits.

Complementing the visitor experience, the redevelopment will also provide a much improved ‘home’ for the Science Learning Institute, housing ‘Inspire’, an adaptable 80-seat space for seminars and exciting live science shows, alongside the ‘Innovate’ classroom which can accommodate an entire class of around 30 school pupils for teacher / scientist collaborative working.

The development has also included the creation of new meeting facilities and offices, to enable Dundee Science Centre’s team to work with partner organisations across the city to continue to create new learning programmes for its diverse range of visitors.

As an independent educational charity, these spaces will enable Dundee Science Centre to widen their reach within Dundee and Tayside to engage a variety of audiences in exciting and inspiring science activities.

Unveiling Medical Marvels and the new Science Learning suite, Linda Leuchars, CEO, Dundee Science Centre commented, “It seems fitting, as we celebrate our 18th birthday, to unveil our new and exciting facilities. Medical Marvels showcases and celebrates the life-changing research being undertaken in and around Dundee right now, local science which is making a global impact and which deserves to be portrayed on this exciting and accessible platform.

“Our new science learning suite significantly increases our capacity and ability to expand our learning activities for our diverse audiences – including public visitors, members, teachers, scientists and community educators.

“Dundee Science Centre is here to bring people together to enjoy science. We are really looking forward to working together with our community and partners to continue to develop our innovative, tailored provision for the 85,000+ visitors that we engage in-centre and on outreach each year.

“By unveiling this redevelopment, a pivotal stage in our evolutionary journey, we are building our future in the areas where we are already excelling: as a leading Scottish visitor attraction; an established centre of excellence in science learning; and as a recognised and valuable community hub. As a registered independent charity, we are thrilled to have achieved our ambitious fundraising targets and would like to thank each and every one of our funders and supporters.”
