Staff at Overgate Shopping Centre in Dundee are preparing for a final weekend of volunteering as part of December Homeless Month.

Over the month of December, management and staff from the centre have been volunteering every Saturday night by suppling tea, coffee and mince pies to the soup kitchen which has operated on the centre’s property at the entrance to Marketgait Car Park for the past 10 years and provides hot food.

As well as volunteering on Saturday nights throughout December, centre staff have also donated warm items to those most in need including 40 hats, 40 gloves and 60 pairs of socks to the value of £250.

Furthermore, in a separate charitable endeavour, Overgate’s Food Bank Month initiative has been rounded up. The entire centre management team volunteered last week at the local food bank to help hand out food to those in need during the busiest time in December.

Overgate’s Food Bank Bank in partnership with The Trussell Trust, the UK charity that runs a network of over 420 foodbanks, saw 2,508 items donated to the centre’s Customer Service Desk with an estimated value of £3,403.

Speaking about the initiative, Morag Dennis, Operations Manager, Overgate said;

“Every Saturday night this month, as part of December Homeless Month, Overgate staff have been donating their time in volunteering at the local soup kitchen. We hope in our own small way to have made a positive difference to those we have met, not only through the hot drinks and food, but by bringing a little company at what can be a very lonely time of year.”
