The Ninth Wave, Scotland’s latest breakthrough indie band, are heading to Carnoustie Library on Saturday, the 4th of May to play an intimate, one-off show in collaboration with Get it Loud in Libraries and the Scottish Library & Information Council. Doors will open at 8pm.
Formed as a result of Glasgow’s burgeoning close-knit music scene, the band, made up of frontman Haydn Park-Patterson, co-vocalist Millie Kidd, synth player Louise McLennan and drummer Lewis Tollan, first made waves in 2016 when they were chosen to play at T in the Park and won the unsigned competition to play at Electric Fields festival. To top off an already incredible year for the quartet, The Ninth Wave won 'Best Newcomer' at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards – all before the release of their first EP.
The band’s debut EP came the following year and cemented their place on the indie music scene. Produced by Dan Austin - whose previous credits include the likes of The Pixies, Massive Attack and Placebo – Reformation has been hailed as a ‘melancholic blend of enthralling indie rock and glistening gothic synths’ (CLASH). Honing their unique sound, The Ninth Wave’s follow-up EP, released in 2018, Never Crave Attention was described as ‘enticing, unstoppable and taking no prisoners’ (Dork).
These fierce songs - and even fiercer aesthetic (Wonderland) – make for a truly remarkable live experience. Reviews praise the band’s ‘electrifying and encompassing sound’ (Gigwise) and ‘full throttle’ energy (Live4ever). The Ninth Wave are also known for their experimentation with DIY staging – using bins for percussion and once holding a gig in old railway arches, using palettes for a stage (Dork). 2019 sees the band tour far and wide as they play support slots with whenyoung and Chvrches, as well as festival spots at SXSW in Austin, Texas and Stag & Dagger in their hometown of Glasgow. The audience’s experience is of paramount importance to The Ninth Wave and it will be interesting to see how their unique style translates to a library setting.
The Ninth Wave will be the first band to appear at Carnoustie Library as part of the Get it Loud in Libraries programme, however audiences across Great Britain are discovering the potential of libraries as unique, intimate music venues that give people of all ages the rare chance to get up close and personal with upcoming artists. In fact, Get it Loud in Libraries boasts a long list of performances from, at the time, unknown artists who then went on to have incredible careers, including Adele, Florence + The Machine and The Vaccines. From their meteoric rise in only a few short years, there is little doubt that The Ninth Wave will soon be among these names and their upcoming gig at Carnoustie Library is the perfect opportunity to share their goth glam stylings with a new audience.
