As part of a national scheme by the Scottish Book Trust, children aged 3 in Angus are eligible to receive a Bookbug Explorer Bag giving young children the opportunity to learn about books and gain valuable skills through reading, writing and drawing. ANGUSalive, in collaboration with the Scottish Book Trust has so far gifted the Bookbug Explorer Bag to over 1,180 children across 56 nurseries and 19 playgroups in Angus since January 2019.

Through the delivery of the Bookbug Explorer Bags, ANGUSalive and the Scottish Book Trust inspire families with young children to explore the wonders of books as they discover new stories together. Nurseries and playgroups in Angus can also request the Bookbug character to come along and hand out the Explorer Bag which creates a magical moment for children as they receive their gift. To enquire about the Bookbug Explorer Bag or a visit from the Bookbug character please contact Sylvia.Main@angusalive.scot.

The Bookbug Explorer Bag includes three picture books that have been specially selected by a panel of early year’s experts and an activity book which will encourage children to engage and talk about their books while sharing their drawings. Also included in the bag are 6 brightly coloured pencils that will entice children to practise their writing, a Bookbug Explorer CD which comes packed full of songs and nursery rhymes for families to enjoy together and a variety of colourful postcards and helpful information leaflets.

Sandra Hood, Head Teacher at Inverarity Primary School, talks very fondly of the programme: “The children were very excited to see Bookbug and receive their bags. The children really enjoyed the story as it was so animated and interesting for them. They also enjoyed the singing and it was great for the parents to see their children in this context.”

The parents were thoroughly impressed with this programme as well, as one parent was commented: “I just wanted to say thank you so much for the book bags you have given to my kids over the years. The kids always love the books that are in them as they are so well chosen and we read them again and again!”
