Families with children in Dundee can get out and see more of their city in the school holidays thanks to the return of a special discounted bus ticket.

Dundee City Council has teamed up with bus operators to offer a reduced fare of 20p to children when they travel with an adult fare payer or concession ticket holder.

Launched with support from the Scottish Government’s Smarter Choices Smarter Places programme; the council; Xplore Dundee; Stagecoach and Moffat and Williamson, it covers all journeys in the ABC Dundee ticket zone.

Running throughout the Dundee school holidays (March 30 to April 14) the scheme will allow families to enjoy a day out and discover the city by bus with up to three under 16s per paying adult including those with season tickets and weekly passes travelling for 20p each.

Mark Flynn, depute convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “Creating services that recognise the day to day challenges faced by many of the people who use them is an important part of our commitment to fairness in the city.

“We know that during the school holidays it can be difficult for many parents to afford to take their children out and the popularity of the scheme, which has doubled the number of children using buses between summer 2016 and summer 2018, is proof of that.”

Stagecoach East Scotland commercial director, Douglas Robertson said:  "The return of the 20p fare for children in Dundee during the holidays is a real example of public transport operators and local authorities working together to encourage sustainable travel, as well as developing the local economy.

“Now more than ever there is so much to see and do in Dundee and this scheme helps to ensure families can make the most of the Easter holidays for less!"

Christine McGlasson, Managing Director of Xplore Dundee said: “Travelling by bus is the best way to get around the city during the holidays – whether it’s visiting friends, hitting the shops or visiting one of Dundee’s many attractions.

“The Holiday Hop makes taking the bus a great value choice for families this Easter and I would encourage everyone to make the most of this fantastic fare!”
