Unemployment Rises But New Jobs Are Being Created

Commenting on the news that Scottish unemployment has risen for the first time in nine months, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

'Although the headline unemployment figures have risen slightly, this has to be seen against the context of a far sharper rise for the UK as a whole.  The fact is that 24,000 new jobs have been created in Scotland and this is a trend that must continue if Scottish economic growth is to be maintained.

'With the Scottish Government preparing its budgetary plans for the next four years, it is clear that a focus on the private sector must underpin its economic policy.  We have a golden opportunity to ensure that the Scottish recovery is a business-led recovery and government must focus on the ability of Scottish firms to grow and create the jobs Scotland needs now and in the future.'
