Organisers have announced a pitch perfect duo to headline a special sporting fundraiser in Dundee sponsored by Thorntons, Brewin Dolphin, Freshjet and DWK Office Solutions.

Two top speakers have been secured, Gordon Strachan OBE and George ‘Doddie’ Weir OBE, for the Dundee Sports Dinner which will be held on Wednesday 18 September at the Invercarse Hotel.

The dinner’s organising committee always try to deliver a unique and entertaining event – and they believe they’ve scored again with the announcement of these football and rugby legends.

Throughout a glittering career, Strachan played for Dundee, Aberdeen, Manchester United, Leeds United and Coventry City, as well as the Scotland national team. He also went on to manage Coventry, Southampton, Celtic and Scotland.

In club football, he played 635 league games, scoring a total of 138 goals, playing 21 of 25 career seasons in either the English or Scottish top-flight. In international football he earned 50 caps, scoring five goals and playing in two FIFA World Cup final tournaments.

Rugby star Doddie Weir made 61 appearances for Scotland and was a mainstay of the team throughout the 1990s. In 1997 he was the first recipient of the Famous Grouse Scotland Player of the Five Nations Award. The lineout specialist was also selected as part of the British and Lions tour of South Africa in 1997.

One of rugby’s most recognisable characters, Doddie began his rugby career with Stewart’s Melville then Melrose before joining the Newcastle Falcons. He returned to Scotland to join the newly formed Borders team where he remained until his retirement from professional rugby.

After being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, in 2017 Doddie launched the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation to raise funds for research into a cure.  The foundation also makes grants to those suffering from MND to improve their quality of life.

At the Invercarse Hotel event, they will be complemented by ‘Scotland’s premier after dinner speaker’ Willie Allan, and the ultimate aim will be raising money for local amateur sports clubs and organisations.

The sports dinner first originated in 1992 and has continued to go from strength to strength, in the process raising over £400,000.

Thorntons is proud to once again be a co-sponsor of the event, and Managing Partner Craig Nicol said: “We hope that this year’s dinner will be even bigger and better than before and will help us raise a brilliant sum for local sporting clubs and groups. It’s vital that we support their ambitions, which in turn promote better health, confidence, social skills, and so much more.

“We’re confident that it’ll be a great night on 18 September, packed full of brilliant entertainment, and topped off with a sumptuous three-course meal.

“We’ve had some incredible speakers down the years, but Gordon and Doddie are up there with the very best.”
