Budget Announcements: Withdrawal of Games Industry Tax Break

In what, on the surface at least, appears to have been a relatively positive Budget for business, the Chancellor's decision to withdraw the tax relief that the previous Government planned for the games industry is a blow for Dundee.   With a cluster of successful game development companies already based here, attracted by the worldwide reputation of the University of Abertay Dundee, the games industry is a key sector in Dundee.  Other countries already offer the industry far more extensive investment and location incentives than the UK, and today's announcement will make it harder to attract games companies to Dundee and keep them here.   On a more positive note, we welcome many of the other announcements in the Budget, including the staged reduction in the main rate of Corporation Tax, the reduction in the Small Company Tax Rate to 20% and the NIC exemption for businesses taking on new workers.
