Dundee Museum of Transport has won funding for two new posts as part of its plans to reinvent itself in a new venue.
Proposals to convert the former Maryfield Tram Depot into the museum’s new home are progressing, with pre-planning discussions under way and a public consultation due to take place throughout 2020.
The museum has also applied for “major” funding from the National Lottery to help it achieve its ambitions.
The plans had previously stalled due to a lack of funds but a completion date has now been set for 2022.
Chairman Peter Webber said: “Dundee Museum of Transport starts 2020 with news of grants for two posts from generous funders.
“The Mathew Trust is funding our manager position for a further two years and Museums Galleries Scotland have agreed to fund a two year contract for a museum development officer.
“Both posts are currently advertised with an intention to have staff in place by the end of March.”
He added: “Plans for the redevelopment of our Maryfield site continue to progress.
“Grants just agreed from Dundee Historic Environment Trust and the Northwood Trust will enable us to complete structural investigations and detailed costings for the project.
“The National Lottery Heritage Fund has agreed to accept an application for major funding for the project, and pre-planning application discussions are underway with local planners and Historic Environment Scotland.”
Designed by Chamber members and Dundee-based Andrew Black Design, phase one of the proposal for the tram depot focuses on the redevelopment of the rear section of the 118-year-old building.
The existing walls, which have been damaged by fire, will be retained with a steel structure inside the brickwork.
A new roof will be installed with the entrance located at the centre of the building, offering access to a cafe, shop and facilities separate from the exhibition space.
The museum will present its plans for the future to the Dundee Civic Trust on January 16 and will have presentations throughout the year including a display at the Overgate Centre on March 21.
The Dundee Civic Trust talk will take place at 7pm at Dundee Art Society on 17 Roseangle.
