Dozens of local clubs and sports people have been awarded a share of the five figure sum which was raised, thanks to the generous donations at the 27th annual Dundee Sports Dinner.

This year’s funds of £23,000 marks a record total for the annual event which has raised over £420,000 since the dinner first launched. Representatives from the beneficiaries were presented with a cheque at Dundee Airport recently.

The fundraising dinner - sponsored by law firm Thorntons, Brewin Dolphin, Freshjet and DWK Office Solutions - recognises the achievements of local sports people and organisations. The event also generates funding for a wide range of trips, competitions, equipment and coaching for sports clubs and organisations across Tayside.

The 2019 event featured two headline speakers namely Gordon Strachan OBE and George ‘Doddie’ Weir OBE alongside well-known after dinner speaker and event host Willie Allan.

Some of the organisations who benefited from the 2019 fundraising total of £23,000 include: Dundee Roller Derby, Alyth Bike Club, Grove Menzieshill Hockey Club, Kanzen Karate, TNT Netball Club, Arbroath & District Athletics, Dundee Hawkhill Harriers, Dundee Wanderers Hockey Club, Lochee Bowling Club, Dundee Stars Junior Ice Hockey Club, Dundee High Rugby, The Brae, Riverside Community Sports Club, Forfarshire Cricket Club, Broughty United Youth Football Club, Morgan FP Rugby Club, Monifieth Athletic FC, Balgay Bowling Club, Dundee City Aquatics, Teigan Getty, show jumper, Dundee Junior Curling Club, DABA Junior Badminton Club, West End Lawn Tennis Club, Dundee United Community Trust, Leisure & Culture Dundee and Dundee East Community Sports Club.

Amy Skea, from Dundee Juniors Curling Club, said: “This is our second grant from the Dundee Sports Dinner and we are aiming to use these funds to subsidise our junior members who play in adult leagues. Without this grant, the weekly ice fees for our playing members can mount up.

“We are very grateful for the support for curling, which is a minority sport and often seen as a sport for older people. Our teams are more than holding their own in the leagues and the future of the sport is looking bright in Dundee.”

Dundee Sports Dinner 2020 is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 23 September at Invercarse Hotel. For more information on the dinner and how to apply for grants visit www.dundeesportsdinner.co.uk.
