Tuesday marked the launch of a new interactive guide for Chinese visitors to the RRS Discovery, making it the first attraction in Dundee to offer Chinese translation.

Dundee Heritage Trust has teamed up with Chinese marketing specialist, Zudu, to create the guide which will make the Discovery much more accessible to Chinese speakers.

The launch celebrated Chinese culture with colourful décor and a dim sum buffet. Red envelopes were also provided so that guests could donate to the Wuhan Charity Federation, a foundation helping those facing adverse conditions in China today.

The innovative new project uses QR codes that visitors can scan to receive translated information to their phones. As well as the guide, the team have developed a public platform on WeChat, a popular Chinese social media app. The platform will keep visitors updated on all the latest news and events from the Trust, as well as allow people to interact with other visitors and leave comments and reviews.

The launch comes at a tumultuous and fearful time for Chinese people living in the UK. Deirdre Robertson, CEO of Dundee Heritage Trust said; “We hope that through this new project we can promote inclusivity and make Discovery Point more accessible to those from all cultures and backgrounds. WeChat is the biggest social media platform in China, so it’s the perfect place to provide Chinese visitors with all the information they need about the RRS Discovery.”

Zudu Managing Director, James Buchan, spoke at the launch and stressed the importance of catering to both UK based and international Chinese speakers; “The project has given Dundee a big push in the right direction when it comes to facilitating Chinese tourists. We’ve been delighted to work on this project and hope it inspires others across the Scottish tourism industry to develop their resources.”
