SCC Welcomes Review of Defence Procurement

Scottish Chambers of Commerce have welcomed the launch of the Ministry of Defence's Review of Single Source Pricing Regulations and believe that the ongoing consultation has the potential to deliver a better deal for Scotland's SMEs.  Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

'All departments of Government are currently working hard to deliver savings and whilst this can be a challenge for business, it can also present opportunities.  The Ministry of Defence has been following the same procurement procedures for too long and this review of tendering processes opens up the prospect of a better deal for Scotland's small and medium sized businesses.

'It is clear that the MoD are looking to open up the prospect of contracting with a wider range of businesses and in particular they seem to be positive about making it easier for SMEs to contract directly with Government and obtain opportunities in the supply chain and that is good news for Scottish business.

'The MoD have had a chequered reputation in Scotland of late as a result of the cuts to defence budgets and the effects on the Scottish airbases and other military establishments.  They need to do more to ensure that Scotland and our businesses benefit from defence spending and opening up procurement opportunities for our small businesses would be a good start.'
