ANGUSalive libraries has seen a 476 percent increase in new digital users as people look for ways to entertain themselves during the government lockdown. The lockdown has led to an exceptional growth in the downloading of the libraries' RBdigital app as people discover the range of materials and resources available from home.
On top of this, there has been a 319 percent increase in downloading e-resources which includes e-audio books, e-books, e-magazines and e-comics, with e-books being the most popular choice with a 182 per cent increase, proving that despite buildings being closed, the county’s libraries are still very much open. The percentages were calculated by comparing activity the month before the lockdown began up until 16 April.
Christine Sharp, Adult & Community Libraries Lead of ANGUSalive, said: “The number of people registering to use digital library services has soared. We have been encouraging people to sign up online with their borrower card to get access to all our e-resources during the lockdown and the team are working hard behind the scenes to ensure that people still have access to digital books and other library material. Libraries provide a vital service for residents and act as community hubs in normal times. Their online digital contribution has now become equally important as people turn to them as a way to help pass the time at home. We are absolutely delighted by the uptake.”
Once joined up, people are making use of our catalogue to explore all our holdings and download whatever interests them. We have a total of over 4,700 items to choose from, with nearly 2,000 eBooks, 2,700 eAudio titles, 47 weekly and monthly magazines and 1500 comics listed. Most popular titles in eBooks and eAudio at the moment include all the Val McDermid, Ian Rankin and Stuart Macbride titles, with Harry Potter still being a firm favourite with young ones. “Heat” and “Best” continue to be the most popular downloaded magazines.”
