Lets Call Time on Tariffs

Published

5th August 2020

Scottish businesses have been absorbing unfair tariffs on our exports to the USA by an increase of 25% to our costs because of the EU Trade Dispute with the USA. This additional tax, which has been in place since October 2019, is having a dramatic effect on our products and services which we provide to our American counterparts.

The USA is Scotland’s top international export destination worth £5.5 billion in 2018 and making up 16.3% of Scotland’s total global exports. This highlights how important and valued a trade partner the USA is to Scotland.

While we welcome the progression of the negotiations which are taking place to produce a Free Trade Agreement between the UK/USA, unfortunately, these tariffs remain in place, with millions being lost in exports every month. Time is running out for the UK and Scottish Government to have these tariffs removed to safeguard future Scottish jobs and Scotland’s export capability.

We understand the USA is reviewing these tariffs with the possibility they could increase even further, which could have a long-term threat to the many industries which export, impacting on our jobs and livelihoods.

We need both the UK and Scottish Government’s to act now to work with the USA Government to have these tariffs removed as a matter of urgency before irreparable damage is caused to iconic and globally respected Scottish exports. Trade disputes between the EU and US on steel, aluminium and aerospace have nothing to do with Scottish produce. Yet our businesses are paying the price every day and further risking job security.

DACC, alongside our wider Scottish Chambers of Commerce network, are asking the UK and Scottish Government to #CallTimeOnTariffs.

Scottish businesses have been hit with a 25% tariff on exports going into the US. The tariff, which has been in place since October 2019, is having a dramatic effect on the amount and cost of goods & services that Scottish companies can provide their American counterparts. We cannot continue to absorb these costs.

The USA is Scotland’s top international export destination. Exports were worth £5.5 billion in 2018, which was 16.3% of Scotland’s total international exports.

While the UK is negotiating a free trade agreement with the US, the tariffs remain in place, with millions being lost in exports every month. Time is running out for the UK and Scottish Government to have these tariffs removed.

The Scottish Chambers of Commerce network campaign, in partnership with the Scottish Whisky Association and others, seeks to bring an end to these unfair tariffs on our exports to the USA.

We’re calling on businesses and our employees to write to their local MP and MSP to let them know how this is impacting on our future jobs.
