A big thank you to all our Angus Recyclers

Angus residents have proved themselves to be among the very best in the land when it comes to recycling household waste.

The drive by people in Angus to recycle more has resulted in the county placing second out of 32 Scottish local authorities in 2019, with a household recycling rate of 59.1%

That is up from 54.7% the previous calendar year and captures waste disposed of via kerbside collections, recycling centres and neighbourhood recycling points. It stands excellent comparison against the Scottish average of 44.9% in 2019.

With all that has happened in 2020, it’s important to remember that 2019 was not an average year for waste and recycling services in Angus – it was when residents embraced necessary changes to the recycling provision at our seven recycling centres.

Those changes have driven the significant increase in the household recycling rate. As the excellent performance of our kerbside recycling services has been maintained, the redesign of recycling centres has witnessed increasing amounts of waste being recycled at our centres.

Communities Convener, Cllr Mark Salmond said: “It is a terrific achievement. I am hugely appreciative of the efforts that our residents continue to make in respect of reducing, re-using and recycling their household waste.

“The way in which the focus on recycling has become second nature to so many of our citizens is magnificent and I would encourage them to keep it up when using our kerbside services and when they visit their local recycling centres. There’s no doubt they are setting an example for others in Scotland to follow.

“Now, more than ever before, we are seeing people putting the Right Stuff in the Right Bin and the Right Skip.

“That justifies the changes made, including the necessary redesign and modernisation of our recycling centre services in February 2019. We now see the proof of all our hard work through the recent national household waste figures released by SEPA.

“We have seen a steady decrease in residual or non-recyclable waste disposal at our recycling centres and an increase in the amount recycled.

“We are also one of the best in terms of sending, or rather not sending, waste to landfill. Only 5.1% of generated household waste in Angus went to landfill. Only one other council had a lower percentage rate among Scotland’s local authorities. This is thanks to our agreement to send our non-recyclable waste to the waste from energy facility at Baldovie, Dundee.

“By adopting this fantastic approach to recycling, residents are helping to ensure the best use of council resources, equipment and staff. My thanks too to the environmental services staff who continue to provide an excellent public service through what are extremely challenging times.”
