In Your Shoes - Andy Gurvan

Having worked in the Builders Merchant industry for over 30 years, and having joined Rembrand in November 2017, I am loving working for my relatively new employers, and thoroughly enjoying my role of Area Sales Manager, which allows me to travel all over Dundee, Angus, Fife and Perthshire. Meeting up with our existing customers is always good, to make sure we are giving them the quality of service that is expected, and finding out about their future projects, and it is always a pleasure to meet up with potential new customers, and outlining where our business can help theirs.

FEELING REFRESHED!

After a weekend off, and feeling nice and refreshed, the early morning view is a great way to kick off a busy week ahead.
If it was my weekend off, then Monday mornings usually begins with a visit to the office, to catch up with any interesting enquiries my sales colleagues have had, and to see if there is anything i need to follow up, so I can schedule it into my working week. It’s also a welcome opportunity to catch up briefly with any computer work, such as producing customer quotations, and processing orders from Friday. Also a good to time to read through the notes from Friday’s sales meeting (which i will come to later!). Once I have caught up, and cleared my feet a bit, I’m off to visit some customers in Dundee!!!

2 BIRDS, 1 STONE

Living in Wormit, certainly helps with my journey today, as I spend the whole of day in Fife. My appointments are widespread today, and include trips to Tayport, St Andrews, Anstruther, Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes. As well as my appointments, I also have a couple of small urgent deliveries to make. Although today Is one of the days that our transport delivers to Fife, delivering small items In the car, can usually mean that the customer receives the goods a bit quicker, and it frees up our transport to allow us to concentrate on other deliveries. It kills two birds with one stone as they say, and of course is all part of the service!

ANGUS ADVENTURES

Today I am heading out to Angus, and hoping to meet a few new customers, as I travel around Forfar, Brechin, Montrose and Arbroath. Some of the smaller contractors in this area are unaware that we offer a regular delivery service into their area, so It’s an ideal opportunity to explain that not only can we deliver to their area, but can also offer very competitive rates. Having spent the last couple of nights doing a bit of work at home, i’m having a movie night with the family tonight!

GROUND WORK

I’m always available and more than happy to sit down with contractors, or private individuals to discuss their current and future building projects. Today I met two separate customers, with similar needs, but vastly differing volumes of material involved. One private customer who Is having a loft and garage converted, and a buyer of a construction company who is pricing materials for a large housing development. I spent a similar amount of time with each, and fully appreciate the opportunity to speak to both. These sort of enquiries can often take weeks, if not months, to bear fruit, but from my point of view, today’s ground work is so important in the development of a working relation between ourselves and the customer.

SALES MEETING

After a few morning appointments, It’s back into the office for a quick catch up, and then onto our regular Friday afternoon sales meeting. It is a great way to exchange information with other members of the sales team, and to maximise every sales enquiry we get. Being out on the road most days, you can feel a bit detached from the office, so the meetings are a great way to catch up with the enquiries and orders that the internal sales team have been working on.
