In Your Shoes - Alison Myles

I have been the Chief Officer of Angus Carers Centre, based in Arbroath, Angus for 5 years. Along with my Board of Directors we create the working environment for a team of 18 paid works and 70 volunteers  to support over 2,000 adult carers, aged over 18 and 100 young carers, 8  -18 aged. My weeks are always very varied stretching from working at a Strategic Planning to supporting carers. The great thing about working in this organisation is that I never lose touch with people, after all live I live in Forfar so see the benefits of the work that charities make in Angus first hand every day. So, here’s my week – it was a good one.

Outcomes & Outside

This week is starting with a very different day. We’ve made the time to get the workers in our Adult Team together to review our current work in response to unprecedented demand on our services. We meet at Murton Farm, an absolutely fantastic local social enterprise just outside of Forfar at 10.00am. We used their classroom for the day. Lots of progress, decisions made and tasks assigned. We made time for a lovely lunch in the Murton Tearoom (their tray bakes are a must). Not often the team is in the same place at the same time!

Finished here at 4.30pm then it was back to the office to finish off the recruitment packs for the vacancies we are adverting in May. (closing date 24/05/19). Got home at 8.00pm, after a snack went for a walk about town to catch up on the day with my partner.

Emergency Card for Carers - who needs to know?

In the office today. Catch with the Admin Team then discuss the capacity impact report we are working on with workers before they go into their allocations meeting. Catch up on emails and then do prep for meeting with the Angus Carers Voice Network at 10.30am. Busy meeting to look at practical ways the Carers Emergency Contact Card can be used more effectively in a crisis and did some planning for the Carers Conversation Conference they are hosting on 12th June. After a sandwich and a cuppie with the carers we finish at 1.30pm.

Change of pace for the afternoon. Review our budget reports as our accounts need to be with the auditor later this week. Check if I have any task on CharityLog (our CRM), yes I do!, so spend time clearly these. Get papers ready for tomorrow’s meeting. A quick hello to the Young Carers Worker as she gets ready to host a Respite Group before I leave at 6pm.

Variety is the Spice of Life

Spent the morning with our chairman Mr Steve Nicol and planned the agenda for the next Board meeting including work areas to be reported.. Met some colleagues for lunch, a hot meal during the day is a bit of a luxury!

Back to the office at 1.45 in time for the Carers Planning & Development Group at 2pm. We checked on the progress of the implementation of the Carers (Scotland) Act 2016 in Angus and planning for the new Angus Carers Strategy. 4.30pm had a 1:1 meeting with worker. 6.30pm had a cup of tea with the Carers Group that was meeting in the Centre that evening. Did some admin work until the group was finished as needed to make sure that the worker was not left on their own to lock up the centre. Home in time to catch up on Emmerdale on iplayer, (we all have our vices!).

Partnership work at its best

At Panmurefield Baptist Centre in Broughty Ferry this morning. The Angus Alcohol & Drugs Partnership, (AADP) are hosting a Partners Event to continue the work on a “Recovery Orientated System of Care” in Angus. One of our workers support families affected by substance misuse so it’s important to be there to make sure they are represented.

Spoke to a worker from Angus Protecting People Team, by morning break we had designed a training programme on “Thresholds of Risk” and looked at how universities could make stronger links with charities to host social work students. Left this at 1.30 to get back to the office to meet with Kate McKay from 4ttude.co.uk who is supporting us on our digital transformation and agreed with Kate to apply for our Cyber Resilience Accreditation.

Left at 5.30 to visit my Dad for our mid-week catch up. We made plans for my sister visiting next month and tried to sort our Brexit, again!

Meet the Minister

Today we were visited by Joe Fitzpatrick MSP, Minister for Health,  Sport and Wellbeing and colleagues from Shared Care Scotland, who administer Short Break funding programmes.  They came to meet staff who are delivering Short Breaks Programmes (Better Breaks, Respitality and Time to Live) and to carers who have had a break from caring, or a break from their routine with the person they care for through these programmes. They tell the minister that getting physical and emotional time away from caring is at the centre of them being able to continue with the care and support they give to their families.

After the minster left at 1.00pm I had my last meeting of the week. This was a briefing with our Parent Carer Worker who is attending a “Strategic Review” consultation event hosted by The Robertson Trust.

Then home to pack for a few weeks in sunny Malta to recharge the batteries.
