A Dundee-based mooring specialist has created a new system targeted at the offshore wind market.

Flintstone Technology has decades of experience in moorings for the oil and gas sector.

The West Pitkerro Industrial Estate firm has applied this knowledge to the offshore floating wind industry with the aim of lowering costs and increasing reliability.

Managing director Andrew Clayson will unveil the system on the opening day of the Floating Offshore Wind Turbines in Marseille on April 25.

He said: “There are many similarities between the offshore floating wind and oil and gas supply chains.

“Our technology, although originally designed for offshore floating production, is suitable for any permanently, moored floating system.

“We believe we can make a real impact in the offshore wind sector to increase efficiency and drive down costs.”

According to Scottish Enterprise, Europe is forecast to build around 25GW of offshore wind capacity by the end of the decade, worth an estimated £60 billion in capital and operational expenditure over the next five years.

In November, Flintstone secured a repeat order of its mooring system for the Moheshkali floating liquefied natural gas terminal, in collaboration with MacGregor, which acquired 51% of the shares of Flintstone in 2016.

The project with Bangladesh-based company Summit LNG Terminal Co will see Flintstone’s system utilised on Summit’s floating storage and regasification unit.

Flintstone has substantial resources, knowledge and experience in many aspects of the offshore marine market including cranes, handling systems and personnel transfer.
