Caroline Millar Talks to Oxford Farming Conference About Diversification

Caroline Millar of The Hideaway Experience recently spent her 40th birthday talking to the Oxford Farming Conference, where she discussed agri-tourism, the diversification of income from farmland by attracting tourists.

Caroline has done this on her farm by setting aside one-sixth of an acre for The Hideaway Experience, her family-run luxury accomodation for romantic breaks and honeymoons.

She said that there is resistance to this from many farmers, who believe that if they diversify they will no longer be \"real farmers\". Caroline believes this is the wrong approach, and opportunities are being missed, especially for those who wanted to involve family members.

\"The key person is often not the farmer but more likely the farmer\'s wife, daughter or son. Forward-looking people are now letting family members use part of the farm asset to create a new enterprise,\" she said.

One of the advantages of this approach was that the value of the assete could be used to secure finance, and if used wisely, this approach can be part of succession planning.
