ANGUSalive, the trust for culture, sport and leisure in Angus, held Paddlefest, it’s first celebration of para water sports at Monikie Country Park on Tuesday 21 June 2022.

Participants were able to launch canoes, kayaks and paddleboards on the water with their family and friends at this inclusive event. Instructors have been qualified with Paddle-Ability training, giving them competence to deliver water sessions to those with a disability, whether physical, sensory /or with learning disabilities at a venue which is equipped for their needs. Those taking part were also supported by Able2Adventure and the Scottish Canoe Association.

Laura Smith, Disability and Inclusion Lead with ANGUSalive said:  “Everyone has had a great day at our first ever Paddlefest for people with a disability.  Some may be leaving a tad wetter than they arrive but the smiles on their faces say it all.  It’s about inclusion and improving opportunities to participate, progress and achieve together. Thanks go to our instructors on the day and also the support provided by Scottish Canoe Association and Able2Adventure.”

Morven Simpson, whose children Kyle and Mary attended Paddlefest, said: “I was very anxious coming here, but everyone has been so reassuring and supportive throughout.  It is lovely to see people with disabilities being treated as individuals and respected for their abilities.”
