Downtown lights are now shining in Exchange Street as part of a long-term campaign to improve Dundee city centre.

Representatives of local businesses joined Councillor Steven Rome to celebrate the new addition to the historic cobbled street.

Suspended between buildings, the illuminated street sign and decorative lights are designed to attract more people to the range of independent businesses operating in Exchange Street.

The enhancement has been made as a result of the council’s City Centre Strategic Investment Plan, which outlines a series of actions over the next 30 years.

Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure convener Councillor Rome said: “I am impressed by this new sign and lights, as well as the determination of local businesses to work together to make the city centre a better place for everyone.

“We are all keen to ensure that Dundee city centre is an attractive destination where there is much to see and do for both locals and visitors alike.

“This involves thinking differently about how we approach solutions and Exchange Street is part of a wider City Nights and City Lights initiative across the city centre.

“I would like to thank the stakeholders in Exchange Street who have supported and backed the plans for this new sign and lights.”

Kelly Fairweather, who runs the Selike restaurant, said: “Since opening The Selkie in Exchange Street I have been taken in by the magic of what is one of Dundee's oldest streets. Fairy Lights were on my agenda from the start so when the Council came along and said they would like to do something I jumped at the chance.

“The signage and lights add that touch of magic and will show visitors we really have something special.

“Exchange street is vibrant, full of independent traders and some brilliant characters. The lights will hopefully just add to what we already have, and I absolutely love them!”

Kasia O’Rourke, assistant property asset manager with Westport Property, said “Westport Property supports the installation of decorative streetlights along Exchange Street, enhancing the charm of this unique street which is full of independent local businesses.

“The new lights create an inviting ambiance for visitors, tourists, and shoppers, whether on foot, by car, or bike. We believe this enhancement will illuminate the street and the spirit of our community, fostering a vibrant atmosphere that encourages commerce. Westport Property is committed to contributing to the growth and appeal of our local businesses.”

Dundee City Council

Dundee draws skilled workers from a 60-minute catchment population of 640,000 and has a local population of over 140,000. The availability of a large pool of highly skilled labour is a key feature in the Dundee economy. Flexibility in the labour force is currently more prevalent in Dundee than in Scotland as a whole. All forms of labour market flexibility - part-time, temporary employment, self-employment and shift work - are widely operational within the city. Labour force stability in the city is excellent, enabling companies to plan with confidence. Labour turnover levels are less than 5% and absenteeism averages 2%.
