ISO9001:2015 Quality Management System Changes

ISO9001 is reviewed approximately every 7 years and some changes have been more significant than others, but ISO9001:2015 is deemed to be the most radical in many years.

The ISO9001:2015 draft international standard (DIS) is currently open to feedback from any interested party. The final draft (FDIS) is due to be published by November 2014 and final publication is expected in September 2015.

Companies will have 3 years from the final publication to adapt their systems, but are being encouraged to think about this now to ensure a smooth transition. So what is changing?

Leadership is emphasised and the need for a specific Management Representative has been removed. In reality, most companies will still allocate responsibility for quality to individual(s), but need to ensure that it is understood at senior levels. Quality System Scotland bespoke in house training specifically addresses this.

Clause numbering will change to ensure a consistent approach across all management standards. This will apply to the Environmental Standard ISO14001, which is also changing in 2015.

The reduced emphasis on documentation may encourage some companies to review heavily documented systems. Quality System Scotland is currently helping clients create streamlined and efficient systems.

The assessment of risk is perhaps the most radical change. Companies are being asked to identify and address the risks to conformity of goods, services and customer satisfaction. Here at Quality System Scotland, we look first at how the standard can help each client. We have already started working with our clients on risk prevention and have a simple method of addressing this so that each company can achieve real business benefits.
