Young Enterprise Scotland Seeks Mentors for Tayside\'s Youngsters

Local businesses can play a part in helping set Tayside\'s youngsters apart from the rest by volunteering to mentor teams in their area, provide venues for meetings or presentations, or inspire them by speaking about their own entrepreneurial journey/career.

To Young Enterprise Scotland, being enterprising means more than being able to set up your own business- it means being able to go out into the world with a can-do attitude, to make positive things happen, whether that be for your own business, or working as part of a larger organisation.

Young Enterprise Scotland encourages enterprising behaviours in young people throughout the country by giving them the chance to set up their own businesses while at school, with the help of a local volunteer business adviser.  Participating schools compete against one another in regional heats, and the winners from each region compete to be the best in the Scotland. The Scottish winners are then put up against the rest of the UK with the winners competing on an international platform at the European finals.  This excellent opportunity is offered to every high school in Tayside for their 5th and 6thyear pupils.

Giving the young people the responsibility of running their own business for the academic year develops many skills that they can take out into the world of work, as well as giving them a taster of what it’s like to be their own boss.  Through the process of running their business, the participants grow in confidence as they develop skills such as teamwork, time management, delegation and networking.  As well as progressing their transferrable skills, many of the participants realise they have a flair for the practical aspects of running a business, such as design, manufacturing, HR, operations or sales.
