Showcasing the best in science imaging talent and techniques, 20 breathtaking images are being exhibited at Dundee Science Centre, including the overall winner which was announced last week, a photograph of the Pregnant Pony Uterus, by Michael Frank.

The other images on display range from a scanning electron micrograph of a greenfly’s eye; a clinical photograph of an elderly woman’s curved spine; an illustration of pollen grains; a confocal micrograph showing drug-carrying particles in the lungs of a mouse; and a picture that shows the intricacies of a paediatric multi-sensory unit.

Following the success of last year’s Wellcome Image Award exhibitions, held simultaneously at venues in all four countries of the UK, the 2015 winning images will be exhibited at 11 venues across the UK, as well as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Koch Institute), USA.  Dundee Science Centre will show the images until Sunday 30 August, with entry included as part of normal admission.

The Awards were established in 1997 to reward contributors to the collection for their outstanding work.

Linda Leuchars, Acting CEO, Dundee Science Centre, “We are absolutely delighted and privileged to have been selected to exhibit these incredible images which bring to life an amazing array of innovative imaging techniques.  Once again, through our exhibits, we are stretching the definition of ‘science’ and very much look forward to watching our visitors’ reactions, sparking their imaginations and encouraging debate.”

The 20 winning images were chosen by nine judges from all those acquired by the Wellcome Images picture library in the past year and were awarded at a ceremony on Wednesday 18 March 2015, where the overall winner was also revealed.
