Allergy Awareness in the Workplace

In the run-up to Allergy Awareness Week (25th April - 1st May) run by Allergy UK, a local hospitality training specialist is running Allergy Awareness Workshops in a bid to improve understanding of the risks and management of allergens in the workplace.

The workshop is being run by Portlethen based DM Training in association with Allergy Action and REHIS (Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland) with the aim of raising awareness amongst people handling food in workplaces such as Nurseries, Schools, Colleges, Care Homes, Hotels and Food Groups.

With everyday foods such as eggs, fish and nuts included in the list of the 14 most common allergens, it\'s clear that the management of such basic foods is vital for those involved in food preparation.

It is estimated that 21 million people in the UK suffer from at least one type of allergy with up to 8% of children and 2% of adults being diagnosed with a food allergy (Food Standards Agency, 2016).

Donna Maver, Managing Director of DM Training, says, \"It\'s now easier for the general public to find information on allergens on food labelling and many restaurants include allergens on their menus so it\'s a logical step to increase awareness in workplaces where food is served.\"
