New Shop to open in Dundee

A new footwear store is to open in Dundee, it has been announced.

Major High Street retailer Footasylum is to open its doors in the Overgate Shopping Centre on August 18.

Describing the news as “exciting”, the Overgate revealed the opening date on Twitter.

The news proves another boost for the shopping centre, with burger chain Five Guys opening its doors last year, and restaurant chain Frankie & Bennies announcing its plans to move in.

Socialites, a concession store selling electric cigarettes, opened in June while Smiggle, a stationery and office supply store, opened in April.

Footasylum, which was launched as a brand in 2005, has more than 40 stores across the UK and provides a mixture of street fashion and sports fashion.

Tim Allen, board member of the Scottish Chamber of Commerce and former president of the Dundee Chamber of Commerce, welcomed news the firm is coming to the city.

And he said that it would be a big boost to the town centre.

Mr Allen said: “It’s great to see any new business coming into the city — and especially the town centre.

“I welcome the Footasylum store and I want to see even more investment in the High Street.

“The Overgate is an important part of the city and this will be great new facility.

“It’s really good news to have more business coming into the city.”

Tim added that he believes the city needs investment by companies like Footasylum to realise the potential of the Waterfront development.

He said: “It’s fair to say that Dundee needs to have a competitive retail offering.

“In 2018, the V&A will open its doors and there will be an increase in visitors.

“When that happens, Dundee needs to be ready to capitalise on that opportunity.

“The city needs to be ready for those visitors.”
