Charity opens its doors to showcase services

A Dundee charity is encouraging local people to find out more about new services available for blind and deaf people at an open afternoon in January.

North East Sensory Services (NESS) provides practical and emotional support to people who are hearing impaired or deaf, and those who have serious sight loss or are blind.

The charity, which also has offices in Aberdeen and Elgin, will introduce new members of staff and present unique new services to the area at the open afternoon, taking place on 17th January. An employment service is being introduced to help visually and hearing impaired people find jobs or volunteer placements, and an IT service will be available to support blind and deaf people with IT queries, including using smartphones and computers to help access services and contact loved-ones.

NESS has been supporting those with hearing loss in Dundee since April 2013, and the charity has recently been contracted by the Dundee Health and Social Care Partnership to extend its services to blind and partially sighted people as part of a three-year contract.

NESS CEO, Graham Findlay, said: “We are proud to show-case our newly expanded resource centre, as well as the important new services which are on offer. NESS offers a wide range of services dependent upon individual need, from learning how to use a cane, to advice on how to get a job, or stay in a job when your sight or hearing is failing.

“The open afternoon is not just for our service users, although we hope many will come along to learn about the wide range of services we offer. We also invite members of the public to drop by, to understand how the right support, adaptations and assistive technology can make life a little easier for those in our community who have poor or no sight or hearing.”

The open afternoon will take place on 17th January from 2pm to 4pm, with members of the public and service users invited to come and speak to members of staff and learn about services available.
