Leading Scottish law firm Thorntons has demonstrated its support for internal career development by promoting five of its employees this New Year, amid an exciting planning period of fresh investment.

Four senior solicitors have been promoted to associates, while one solicitor has been promoted to senior solicitor.

The four new associates are Amy Jones, Lauren Rae, Cheryl Wallace and Andrina McDowall.

Craig Nicol, joint Managing Partner at Thorntons, said: “We see it as vital to promote from within and continue to expand our own talent. It provides the motivation for our colleagues to work hard for the firm and our clients.

“All vacancies are internally advertised as a way to support career management and development and we are delighted to start the New Year with promotions across our offices in various specialist teams.”

Amy Jones is based in Thorntons’ Dundee Business Law Employment team and joined the firm in 2008 initially to complete her traineeship. She has specialised in employment law for five years and often works with the corporate and land and rural business teams advising on the employment aspects of business acquisitions and disposals. Amy regularly provides in-house training to clients and presents at external events.

Lauren Rae is also based in Dundee but works in the Dispute Resolution and Claims team. After joining in 2010, Lauren completed her traineeship with the firm and now deals with a broad range of litigation work including debt recovery, insolvency, landlord and tenant disputes, evictions and recovery of possession, contractual disputes, professional negligence and immigration. She regularly appears in the Sheriff Court to cover small claim, summary cause and ordinary cause actions and has also assisted in a variety of Court of Session actions.

Cheryl Wallace also works in Dispute Resolution, Claims and Family Law team but is based in the Cupar office. She worked with Steel Eldridge Stewart for four years post qualification and joined Thorntons with the merger in 2014. Cheryl advises clients on a broad range of litigation matters but has a particular interest in family law and advises clients on matters such as residence of children, separation, divorce and cohabitation. She has recently been elected to the Family Law Association Committee.

Andrina McDowall joined Thorntons in 2015 and works in the Business Law and Commercial team at the St Andrews office. Working primarily in property acquisition and disposal, leasing, property portfolio management and security work, she has advised clients including major shopping centre owners and major lending institutions. Andrina has a particular interest in property investment and has expertise with a variety of investment vehicles ranging from niche commercial property investors and developers to institutional investors.

Kirsty Stewart has been promoted to senior solicitor in the Business Law team at Thorntons’ Dundee office. She joined the firm in 2011, completed her traineeship and now deals with a wide range of intellectual property matters. Kirsty has a particular interest in compliance issues such as data protection and freedom of information and is heavily involved in the team’s early stage and high growth sector. She often works with a wide variety of new companies to assist with securing investment and ensuring that the company’s intellectual property assets are adequately protected.

Nicol added: “All five of our newly promoted employees have shown a great deal of enthusiasm and commitment to Thorntons. We are delighted that some joined us initially as trainees and then secured permanent positions within the firm and continue to progress.

“We will continue to invest in our training and internal developments as we look to ensure that our colleagues appreciate the value they add to the firm and our client services.”
