GSK, the science-led healthcare company, has reopened applications for its 2017 UK and Ireland apprenticeship programme.  In total, the company will be recruiting approximately 90 apprentices, of which 5 will work at GSK’s manufacturing site at Montrose.

This year, GSK’s Montrose site will be recruiting apprentices in Engineering, Operations and Quality Assurance.  As well as studying towards a nationally recognised qualification, apprentices will gain valuable on-the-job experience alongside some of the industry’s leading talent.

Carys Reid, a 3rd year Engineering apprentice at Montrose, said: “I used to think that apprenticeships were all about learning a trade such as joinery or bricklaying, but when I read about the modern apprenticeship scheme I realised that the mix of academic study, varied skills training and practical application was just what I was looking for.  An apprenticeship at GSK gives you opportunities to develop professionally and personally. As well as working for my HND, I have joined the site’s STEM ambassador programme, helping to promote science and technical careers to school pupils.  Modern apprenticeships at GSK are a great way to start your career and I would highly recommend it to anyone.”

GSK’s apprenticeship programme has been ranked as one of the UK’s top 20 in the 2015-16 RateMyApprenticeship.co.uk Top Employers list - a portal which shares reviews from current and previous apprentices.

Around 40% of GSK apprentices are female, which is significantly higher than the industry average. In addition, a number of GSK apprentices have received national awards (see notes).

GSK offers both Higher and Advanced apprenticeship opportunities that typically range from two to four years in duration, depending on the discipline. Apprentices will gain valuable on-the-job experience alongside the industry’s leading talent and receive a competitive base salary with access to the company’s benefit scheme.

This year, the Montrose site is offering apprenticeship opportunities in Manufacturing Operations and Quality Assurance for the first time, as well as the well established Engineering apprenticeships. The Science Manufacturing apprenticeships will work towards an Advanced Apprenticeship in Manufacturing with the potential to go on to further study.  The Pharmaceutical Technical apprentices will have the opportunity to gain knowledge about Quality, Engineering and Manufacturing in the Pharmaceutical industry as well as working towards a Foundation degree in Applied Chemical Science Technology.

Les Thomson, Site Director for Montrose, said:“Apprentices are our site’s future talent and a crucial part of our business. By joining the team, you will not only work alongside some of the world’s leading professionals but will also help ensure that patients and consumers all over the world continue to have access to our products.”

“We offer our apprentices the learning opportunities and structured support to help them reach their potential and some talented and ambitious individuals have worked with us at Montrose. In fact, some of the most senior leaders at Montrose have come through our apprenticeship programme.

“We look forward to welcoming the next generation of apprentices.”

Applications for apprenticeship opportunities at GSK are scheduled to close on 20 February 2017. For more information, visit www.gsk.com/apprenticehips.
