With the Taste of Angus Festival 2017 just over a week away, local food and drink producers, eating places and culinary experts are preparing to showcase the flavours of Angus at a variety of exciting foodie events.

On the opening day of the festival, Sunday, 19 March, the award-winning Hideaway Experience at Auchterhouse will throw open the gates for a rare opportunity to look around their secluded, five-star luxury cabins, with tea and cakes in the farmhouse at the end of the tour. Another countryside accommodation provider, Newton Farm Holidays, will be offering a ‘Down on the Farm’ experience on 23 and 25 March, when the Nicoll family will be welcoming visitors to their farm, where they can meet the latest spring arrivals, unusual residents such as their herd of Boer goats and find out more about life on a working farm.

Kirriemuir butcher Cliff Bertram will share the secrets of his trade at a talk at the town’s Gateway to the Glens Museum on 21 March, while on 22 March, the beer makers from Angus brewery Park Brew will be talking about their craft ales at the Caledonian Hotel in Brechin.

“This is a chance to taste our beers, find out what’s involved in brewing them and what makes each one different,” explained John Leatherbarrow of Park Brew, who will also be at the Meet The Brewer event at The Gourmet Grocer in Brechin on 25 March. “We’re delighted to be involved in the Taste of Angus Festival – locally produced food and drink is always best. There are so many great places to buy and eat food in Angus, especially when accompanied by a great beer!”

Hospitalfield Garden Café, with renowned local chef Gillian Veal at the helm, officially opens on 5 April but is holding a special preview event during the Taste of Angus Festival. “On Saturday, 25 March, we’ll be celebrating the Hospitalfield Garden springing back to life after winter by welcoming visitors to our new café,” said Gillian.

“As we grow a fantastic selection of edible flowers, micro-herbs and heritage vegetables at Hospitalfield, the Garden Café’s menu will be packed full of mouthwatering dishes made with ingredients straight from our garden and from the abundance of fantastic local produce available to us.”

The Taste of Angus Festival draws to a close with The Food Life’s indoor food market at Strathmore Mart in Forfar on Sunday, March 26 – Mother’s Day.

“Whether you treat your mum to lunch at our pop-up restaurant or in the street food village, or buy fresh, seasonal ingredients from our local stallholders so you can cook a delicious meal at home, this fabulous showcase of the region’s food and drink will ensure a Mother’s Day to remember,” said Jillian McEwan of The Food Life.
