Digging up Angus’ Past

Angus will be joining in with the national celebrations around Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology next month when the annual Angus Heritage Week kicks off across the county on September 1.

“Every year, Angus Heritage Week shines a light on the rich heritage and fascinating history of this corner of Scotland,” said Councillor Ron Sturrock, Angus Council Economic Development spokesperson at the launch of the programme for the festival, which will run from 1-10 September. “It is only fitting that a strong programme of events is taking place in our county during 2017, the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, providing people from near and far with opportunities to discover more about life in Angus in days gone by.”

This year’s event programme features several events looking at the archaeology of the area, including illustrated talks and displays at Angus libraries, an exhibition of Monifieth’s archaeology and a talk by local historian Norman Atkinson about Arbroath 800 years ago, before the abbey was built.

The programme also lists open weekends at historic buildings, guided walks, special tours of National Trust of Scotland properties and the ever popular Auchmithie Heritage & Arts Festival, which takes place over the weekend of 9/10 September. In addition, the guide features information about this year’s Doors Open Days weekend, which takes place on 2/3 September and is a chance to step inside rarely-seen properties.

“We are very privileged to live in a county where we are surrounded by history, ancient and recent,” continued Councillor Sturrock. “Angus Heritage Week celebrates our county’s connections to the past, while also providing us with an excellent opportunity to showcase to visitors what a wonderful destination Angus is, with our fascinating historical sites, breathtaking countryside and coast, towns and villages packed full of heritage and events such as the 2018 Open on the near horizon.”
