Step Inside With Doors Open Days

Fascinating buildings across Angus will be welcoming the public on 2/3 September when they take part in this year’s Doors Open Days, which is held at the start of Angus Heritage Week.

Doors Open Days are held throughout Scotland and provide free access to buildings which normally charge an entrance fee, are not usually open to the public or are private dwelling places. Co-ordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust, Doors Open Days offers a rare chance to peek inside and find out what goes on behind closed doors!

This year, participating buildings include Arbroath Lifeboat Station, 500-year-old Carmyllie Church, the Mortuary Chapel in Arbroath’s Western Cemetery, Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club near Glamis, Forfar’s Balmashanner Monument and the Camera Obscura in Kirriemuir.

Several private homes are also taking part in this year’s Door’s Open Days, including Kinnaird Castle near Brechin and an award-winning eco-house near Montrose. Local architect Garry Adam has designed and built a low-energy, experimental home in a walled orchard in Kirkton of Craig. As well as attracting admiring looks, Garry’s eco-house keeps his family cosy all year without a central heating system or a boiler and the Saturday afternoon of Doors Open Days will be a chance to find out more about this stunning building – and eco-living in the Scottish climate.

“Old and new, there are so many eye-catching buildings in Angus,” said Councillor Ron Sturrock, Angus Council Economic Development spokesperson. “This year, the properties taking part in Doors Open Days truly highlight the diversity of Angus’ built heritage, from Castle Hill in Forfar, once the site of a castle used by the kings of Scotland, to the secret nuclear bunker on the edge of Arbroath which was built at the height of the Cold War, to Garry Adam’s ultra-modern eco house.

“Doors Open Days are always a highlight of the Angus Heritage Week programme, encouraging people from near and far to explore Angus.”
