Youngsters from secondary schools across Dundee met inspiring female role models last Friday (27th) to learn how they could embark on successful careers of their own.

Now in its fourth year, Michelin’s ‘Inspiring Females’ event saw around 70 female pupils spend a morning at Michelin’s Baldovie Road site with 11 representatives from the worlds of business, the arts, science, law, healthcare and the emergency services.

The women discussed their career paths and achievements with the girls, as well as any challenges they have overcome along the way, all with the aim of raising aspirations and opportunities, and showing them what is possible.

Guests who attended the Michelin Athletic Club included:

Audrey Ashforth, business partner controller at Michelin

Lindsey-Anne Knox, business owner and therapist

Alison Henderson, CEO of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce

Firefighters Tara Watson and Laura Collins

Diane Perera, mental health nurse

Beth Bate, director at Dundee Contemporary Arts

Mary Stewart, head of offender outcomes at HMP Castle Huntly

Dr Lucina Hackman, forensic scientist

Becky Reid, criminal justice social worker

Laura McDowall, partner at Blackadders

The event was initiated by Michelin to encourage women to be the best they can be in whatever their chosen career path.

Michelin personnel manager Lorna Reid, said: “This is a great opportunity for young women to see what they can achieve if they put their minds to it; our Inspiring Females events engage and inspire everyone involved.

“We’d like thank all our inspiring females who attended the event for the advice and guidance they provided and for showing the pupils what really is possible whether it’s a career in manufacturing or any other sector, they really can be all they want to be.”

St Paul’s RC Academy pupil Charlie-Ann Reid, 13, attended the event. She said: “The event was interesting and fun. If you know what you want to be and it doesn’t work out, then it’s not too late to change. If you put your mind to it you can succeed, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

Alison Henderson, CEO of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce, added: “It was an inspiring event. It’s hard when you are young working out what you want to do. Most women who attended didn’t know what they wanted to do when they left school. My advice is do something you want to do and use the skills you’ve got and work on them.”
