Egbert Taylor and Dundee City Council are calling for all budding young artists at primary schools throughout Dundee to get creative and design an image to adorn street Euro bins in a competition that runs until to June 1.
Pupils from St Joseph’s and Victoria Park primaries will help launch the competition on Wednesday (May 9).
Entrants from P6 classes are being asked to create a waste and recycling-themed design of their choice on A4 paper, making sure that the design includes a call to action for the public to correctly place their waste in the bin.
One winner from each of Dundee’s eight electoral wards will have their design professionally printed as decals at Egbert Taylor’s Oak Park site and showcased on a series of bins throughout each of the eight areas.
Egbert Taylor will also present each of the eight winners with a Professional Wooden Art Studio set and a trophy.
On launching the competition, Kevin Docherty, Egbert Taylor’s Area Manager, comments: “After almost 60 years of producing our iconic Continental bins the Taylor logo and four-wheeled steel container has become ubiquitous. However, by launching an art and design competition we’re aiming to provide Dundee City Council with an opportunity to not only make their bin fleet look unique, but also help engage children with recycling by making waste fun.”
A judging panel will look at all entries received and pick eight winners the first week in June. Bins will display the eight winning designs until the end of 2018.
Councillor Kevin Cordell, city council neighbourhood services convener adds: “Engaging those who represent the future of Dundee when it comes to waste and the environment is essential if we are to increase recycling levels and achieve our sustainability targets. This is a fun approach to getting schoolchildren involved and a way in which we can inspire creativity amongst the city’s primary schools. I am now looking forward to seeing the designs and wish all participants the very best.”
Designs are to be addressed and sent to Richard White, Dundee City Council’s Project Officer at Dundee City Council, 50 North Lindsay Street, Dundee, DD1 1QE by 5pm on 1 June. Each entrant’s name, primary school and a parent or carer’s contact telephone number must also be written on the reverse.
