Improved security measures on chip and pin cards have prompted parking bosses to upgrade the city’s meters.
Support for the current chip and pin hardware is being phased out as it no longer provides adequate protection for customers making payments using credit/debit cards and as a result 135 meters will be upgraded.
Lynne Short convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “The convenience of having different ways to pay for your parking, including cash free, is important to residents and visitors to the city.
“Just as critical is that they can do so safely and securely and now with even more choice because the upgrade also provides contactless payment as an option for the first time.”
Members of the city development committee, which meets next week (February 18) will be asked to approve two quotes for the work totalling £189,245 for upgrading street and surface level meters as well as those in multi-storey car parks.
The upgrades by Metric and Orbility will also give customers more peace of mind with greater encryption of data.
If the tenders are approved work will start in the next few weeks with the upgrades completed by April.
