Happy 50th Birthday to Fire Surround Centres!

A Dundee family business has celebrated its 50th birthday.

Gary and Graeme Turnbull, Directors of Fire Surround Centres, marked the occasion amongst clients, friends and family, including their mother Stella who, alongside her husband Bob,  opened their first workshop on Dundee’s Hawkhill, next to the Whitehall Theatre in 1969.

Gary said, “Our Dad made the fireplaces, while our Mum sanded and varnished them by hand in the window area at the front.   They also lived in a flat on the middle floor above the workshop.   Dad had initially served his time as a joiner with Bett Brothers housebuilders, but decided to branch out on his own at the age of 21.

“Fifty years on, we enjoy warm relationships with all of our customers, suppliers and the local business community and would like to thank each and every one of them for their business and support throughout the years, and for recommending us to others.”

Fire Surround Centres went on to open a number of showrooms across the area - Melville Street, Perth; Gray Street, Broughty Ferry; Hilltown and Arbroath Road, Dundee and then, latterly, Princess Street in Dundee where the business remained for 28 years.

With a team of four and three fitting teams, Gary and Graeme now run the business with its purpose-built showroom, in Ash Street, Dundee, selling a huge range of traditional and contemporary fireplaces and stoves to both the general public and other businesses, including architects and housebuilders, throughout Tayside, Perthshire and Aberdeen.

As a local, family business, the brothers strive to go above and beyond the service one might generally expect and are committed to going the extra mile when it comes to everything they do, from the planning stages right through to the after-sales service.

Gary added, “We understand the importance of coming home to a warm and welcoming home, and appreciate the investment our customers are making, so we always ensure that they choose the right product, whether an eco-friendly wood burning stove or a state-of-the-art, contemporary fireplace to create a real ‘wow!’ factor.   Likewise, when it comes to our commercial clients, we can get involved from the outset of the design and build stage, recommending the best and most appropriate energy-efficient fires, stoves and surrounds for care homes, new builds or office spaces.”
