The Trust

We are seeking applications from dynamic individuals with the appropriate skills and experience to become the next Chair of Dundee Museum of Transport Trust. This is an exciting time to be Chair of the Dundee Museum of Transport. Having secured the site of the former Maryfield Tram Depot in 2014, the Trustees are aiming to transform this Grade ‘B’ listed historic building to become the new home of the museum, and secure the long-term future of our collection and community.

The Museum

Dundee Museum of Transport has been open at its Market Mews site for five years. An independent museum (SC041529) governed by a Board of Trustees, the museum achieved Accredited status from Museums Galleries Scotland in 2018 while maintaining a three star rating with VisitScotland since 2015. The museum supports around 50 volunteers at any one time. We have seen visitor numbers grow by 20% year-on-year since 2016, with 12,500 visitors attending in 2018. The museum has established itself as a popular attraction within the City.

The Role

The Chair has overall responsibility for governance and strategic development. An effective communicator, the Chair works in partnership with Trustees, staff and volunteers. The Chair provides strategic leadership, safeguarding the museum’s aims and financial viability as it proceeds with a major capital project to secure its future.

The Chair makes sure Board meetings are run effectively and to protocol. They have a strong understanding of the Trust’s constitution and an awareness of relevant external organisations and partners. Partnership working is essential to the success of the museum and the Chair is key to maintaining existing relationships and nurturing new ones.

The Commitment

The Board of Trustees meet monthly on a weekday during the last week of the month and three sub-committees have been set-up to support museum projects and activities. A commitment of around five hours per week is to be expected.

Experience Required

Experience of working in a strategical and collaborative way in the third sector and a passion for heritage is essential. Knowledge of museums and transport collections is desirable.

This is a fantastic opportunity to develop and utilise your skills to grow a successful small museum and take part in shaping its future. For more information about the museum visit www.dmoft.co.uk.
