Efforts to end period poverty in Dundee schools through the supply of free sanitary products will be discussed at the children and families service committee.

Approval is being sought to roll out a delivery model that will make products available during term time and holidays, at both schools and community facilities.

The views of Dundee young people have helped shaped the proposed delivery model.

Depute committee convener Councillor Roisin Smith said: “I am pleased at the progress that has been made in Dundee and proud of the role that young people have played.

“This is an important step on making Dundee a better and fairer city.

“I would also like to thank the Scottish Government for making this possible through funding.

“The report shows how we are committed to tackling period poverty and providing sensitive and sensible solutions.”

The committee is being asked to approve a pan-Tayside delivery model, with Tayside Contracts providing the managed service.

The committee meets on Monday October 28.

Dundee City Council

Dundee draws skilled workers from a 60-minute catchment population of 640,000 and has a local population of over 140,000. The availability of a large pool of highly skilled labour is a key feature in the Dundee economy. Flexibility in the labour force is currently more prevalent in Dundee than in Scotland as a whole. All forms of labour market flexibility - part-time, temporary employment, self-employment and shift work - are widely operational within the city. Labour force stability in the city is excellent, enabling companies to plan with confidence. Labour turnover levels are less than 5% and absenteeism averages 2%.
