SCC Comment on Extension of Furlough Scheme

On the Treasury’s early decision to extend the furlough scheme a further month, Dr Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

“Any extension of lifeline support to businesses and their employees is welcome when most are facing a bitter winter of difficult trading conditions and further lockdowns. The extension of the business loan scheme is also welcome which will enable businesses to plan.

“But the fact is governments need to think longer term and not just month by month, for example they must press on with fundamental stimulus programs to reduce business costs. Likewise Scottish Government must pull out all the stops to compensate businesses where they are forced to stop trading or the supply chain is critically impacted. Jobs hang in the balance that may not survive the New Year.”
