A View From The Bridge - Wayne Paul

Wayne Paul is the Engagement Manager for the University of Dundee’s Graduate Apprenticeship Programme, offering fully funded employee upskilling opportunities to businesses of all sizes.

Investing in your workforce

For the last three and a half years I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of employers across Tayside, Fife and beyond, offering all sorts of products and services.

Many of these businesses will never have met or don’t even know the others exist; however, they all share a common goal of wanting to invest in the development of their workforce.

But many just don’t know the best way to do this.

Some don’t have the time, resources, or facilities to make it happen, others feel it is something that is out of their reach financially, or it just never reaches the top of their to do list.

There is so much support available to businesses, from the Scottish Apprenticeship Family to Business Gateway, Chambers of Commerce, Scottish Enterprise, to name but a few, that it can be a daunting and overwhelming process knowing where to begin.

But it shouldn’t be this way, which is why it has been my mission since I started in this role, to ensure that every business I deal with knows exactly how they can invest in the development of their workforce at no additional cost.

And I am delighted to say that I have successfully helped hundreds of businesses to do just that, be that through our Graduate Apprenticeship Programme, through other University services (Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, student placements, recruitment, etc.) or through external partners like local colleges and business support services.

By investing in your workforce, you are investing in your business, and I am delighted to be able to play a small part in this process.

Graduate Apprenticeship Programme

If you are interested in developing the skills of your workforce (of all ages), at no additional cost to your business, then our fully funded Graduate Apprenticeship Programme may be right for you.

Our Programme gives you the opportunity to develop current or new members of your workforce (of all ages) to honours degree level, and at no additional cost to your business, in the following areas:

Business Management
Civil Engineering
Engineering, Design and Manufacturing
IT Management for Business
IT Software Development

Starting in September, employees spend one day per week on campus and the remainder of the week working in their role.

At the end of four years, they will leave with a full honours degree.

Our courses are fully funded, so there is no additional cost involved. We have to say no additional cost, as you still need to cover your employee’s salary for the day they are out of the business.

Each course has been designed around the needs of the industry, with a varied curriculum being taught alongside work-based learning. This allows apprentices to not only understand and appreciate the theory behind why things are done in the industry, but also experience how they are done through both practical and work-based learning.

This combination of university and work-based learning has been shown to not only increase the individual’s knowledge and understanding but also broaden their skills and experience. Plus, they are transferring this knowledge straight back into their business!
