Children and Families Convener End of Term Message

Councillor Stewart Hunter is wishing all Dundee pupils and their families a happy and safe Christmas and New Year as the end of term approaches on Wednesday (Dec 22).

The children and families convener is also thanking them for the efforts they have made to keep everyone safe, especially in the face of the new Omicron variant.

He said: “Yet again, our pupils and their families have responded to more coronavirus challenges and I would like to pay tribute to them for their resilience in the face of these.

“It is vital that we do everything to keep our nurseries and schools open, families make a huge contribution to that.

“The hygiene guidance in schools is there for a reason and it is heartening to see the huge backing that has been given.

“We are all disappointed that Christmas activities could not quite go ahead as normal this year, but I hope that everyone can appreciate the reasons behind this. The recent emergence of Omicron means we have to be more vigilant than ever.

“There has not been the disruption to nurseries and schools that was witnessed in 2020, but education has been operating under very different circumstances this year.

“I would also like to thank all our nursery and school staff, and also everyone who works across our wider children and families service.

“It is intended that nurseries and schools will open as planned after the holiday, and there will be additional safety measures in place.

“However, I would ask all families to look at the council’s website and social media channels in case there are any updates.”

Dundee City Council

Dundee draws skilled workers from a 60-minute catchment population of 640,000 and has a local population of over 140,000. The availability of a large pool of highly skilled labour is a key feature in the Dundee economy. Flexibility in the labour force is currently more prevalent in Dundee than in Scotland as a whole. All forms of labour market flexibility - part-time, temporary employment, self-employment and shift work - are widely operational within the city. Labour force stability in the city is excellent, enabling companies to plan with confidence. Labour turnover levels are less than 5% and absenteeism averages 2%.
