Dundee Company Urges Business Community to Unite in Gruelling Army Trek

Local businesses are being urged to get behind the nation’s veterans by supporting one of Scotland’s toughest endurance challenges.

Launched in 2011, the Army Benevolent Fund’s Cateran Yomp, supported by headline sponsor Babcock, will once again challenge teams of soldiers, veterans and civilians to walk 22, 36 or 54 miles across the rugged terrain of the Perthshire countryside within 24 hours.

Participants will head off on the Cateran Trail in the foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains at 6am on Saturday 8 June 2024, returning to Blairgowrie in the early hours of Sunday 9 June. This year’s event, which falls just two days after the 80th anniversary of D-Day, also coincides with the charity’s 80th anniversary.

Dover Fueling Solutions’ Dundee office has supported the event for three years, both through participation and as T-shirt sponsor.

With almost 50 staff taking part since 2021, ‘Dover Dream Team’ has raised over £10,000 for the charity. A staggering 16 staff have signed up for this year’s event, some grasping the challenge for the first time.

Kitija Zalaiskalna, Marketing Communications Specialist, said, “The Cateran Yomp has become an event that unites us, makes us stronger, and allows us to support colleagues who were once in service. At the start of each year, there’s a buzz and discussions start to take place around who’s going to take part, who’s reaching for Bronze, Silver or Gold and when the training as a team can begin.

“The team has grown since 2021, which is amazing, as it only reinforces how determined we are as individuals and as a team. It’s been extremely motivating to see so many individuals participate year after year and see everyone in DFS-sponsored t-shirts as they embark on climbing the tough terrain and reaching the finish line. Every year, we have support staff who volunteer to help along the way – they are the ones the participants are happiest to see throughout the various touch points and finish line. Although it’s an individual challenge, we truly tackle it as a team. Throughout the three years, we’ve managed to raise over 10k for the Army Benevolent Fund, which is an incredible amount of money – we appreciate everyone’s contribution and can’t wait to get out there training!”

As well as entering a team, with large group discounts available on request, businesses can support the event in other ways.

Launching its sponsorship package, the Army Benevolent Fund is offering 15 opportunities to local businesses, from sponsoring the goody bags to one of the three checkpoints, CP1, Bronze and Silver.

The event also provides multiple product promotion opportunities, including event-wide sampling and promotion.

Harry Whiteley, Senior Events Manager (Challenges) at the Army Benevolent Fund, added, “If you’re looking for a team-building event with a difference, one you and your colleagues will never forget, the Cateran Yomp is for you. From meeting up with colleagues for training walks to sharing the miles with some truly inspirational people, the Yomp is a challenge like no other, underpinned by discipline, integrity and teamwork. Yes, it takes every ounce of grit you possess, but it’s also a chance to build resilience within your team, make memories and celebrate your potential in a way you never thought possible.

“For those who would rather not take part but wish to show their support, we’ve got a range of sponsorship opportunities from which businesses can gain so much.  As well as supporting a charity which makes a lifelong difference in the lives of veterans and their families, some of whom are living in your communities, it’s a fabulous opportunity to promote your brand to over 5,000 passionate Yompers with coverage across Scotland and the UK in the approach to and during the event weekend. Seeing your brand spark conversations and make an impact on some of the most beautiful scenery in the world is an amazing opportunity.

“Importantly, it’s also a way to present and substantiate your commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), proving your positive contribution to society and community spirit more widely.”
